Description

Burslem, Staffordshire born inside left Edward Wordley began his football career with hometown club Port Vale at the back end of the First World War but after the War signed for Welsh club Pontypridd in August 1919, from where he joined Shelton United in October 1920. He played for Cheshire County League club Leek Alexandra in 1921 from where he was signed by Third Division (North) club Stalybridge Celtic in May 1922, making his Football League debut against Tranmere Rovers in September in the second match of the season.

Wordley was a regular across much of the season, scoring 4 goals in 26 appearances, but when Stalybridge Celtic withdrew from the Football League at the end of the season despite finishing in a respectable eleventh place in the division, Wordley joined Cheshire County League club Congleton Town in July 1923, moving to Macclesfield Town in August 1926. Most of his 12 appearances for Macclesfield came at left half, but he was also used in the forward line when he scored his league goal in the 5-1 home victory against Whitchurch in January 1927.  He also scored in the 6-0 home win against Poulton Rovers in the first round of the Cheshire Senior Cup but on this occasion he was at left half. He finally joined Whitchurch in 1927, his last recorded club before his retirement.
