Elton, Lancashire born goalkeeper Jim Holt began his football career with Elton and played for Summerseat in 1907 from where he joined First Division club Bury in April 1908. Initially understudy to Jimmy Raeside, he made his Football League debut in place of Raeside in Bury’s second match of the 1910-11 season, in a 1-1 draw with Woolwich Arsenal at Gigg Lane, and he held his position playing 22 matches for The Shakers until a heavy 6-1 FA Cup defeat at FA Cup holders Newcastle United in January 1911, on their way to the Final where they would lose to Bradford City, saw him lost his place with Raeside recalled. Holt joined Lancashire Combination club Nelson in the 1911 close season and he later played for Haslingden, his last recorded club.
