Dalziel, Lanarkshire born right back John “Jock” Hutton, originally an inside forward, was on the books of local professional club Motherwell in 1914 and also those of Heart of Midlothian in 1915, playing junior football for Larkhall Thistle in 1916, Bellshill Athletic in 1917, and Hall, Russell & Co in 1918 before joining Scottish League club Aberdeen in May 1919.
He soon developed a reputation for toughness with tremendous power in his kicks, with impressive agility despite his burly physique, and soon won international recognition, becoming Aberdeen’s most capped Scottish international player at that time when winning seven of his ten Scotland caps while at Pittodrie, also captaining his country. His first cap was awarded in March 1923 when he played against Ireland in a 1-0 win at Windsor Park, Belfast and he scored from a penalty kick in a 2-2 draw against Wales at The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham in October 1927, winning his final cap against Ireland at Firhill the following February. He also represented The Scottish League 4 times between October 1923 and November 1925, playing twice against The Football League and twice against The Irish League.
In October 1926, after 17 goals in 279 appearances for The Dons, he joined English First Division club Blackburn Rovers for a then-record £6,000 transfer fee, making his Football League debut against Burnley immediately after joining them. Hutton won an FA Cup winners’ medal in 1928, when Blackburn beat Huddersfield Town 3-1 at Wembley and played six seasons of first team football at Ewood Park, playing his last match for Rovers at Arsenal in May 1932, scoring 5 goals in 146 appearances before he retired from football in 1933.
Hutton managed Belfast club Linfield during the 1940’s. During his time in charge, Hutton signed Tommy Dickson for Linfield.
