Description

Boothstown, Lancashire born centre forward Llewellyn “Llew” Purcell had the briefest of senior football careers. He started his football career with Pendlebury and played for Cheshire County League club Winsford United in 1930, from where he was signed by Second Division club Oldham Athletic in 1931, making his Football League debut in a 2-1 home defeat to Bury in January 1932. He wasn’t retained at the season end and after a trial with Stockport County he re-joined Winsford United, thereafter playing for Witton Albion in 1933, Rossendale United in 1934 and finally Mosley Common in 1935, his last recorded club.

NB in the photograph, Purcell (left) sits with Oldham Athletic team mate Jack Hallam, who also played his only match for Oldham against Bury in January 1932.
