Bristol born inside right Albert Banfield began his football career with St Philip’s Marsh and played for Bath City in 1932, from where he was signed by hometown Third Division (South) club Bristol City in 1933, making his Football League debut at Swindon Town in January 1934, keeping his place through to the end of the season as The Robins finished in the lower reaches of the table. He had to wait until the end of October to appear for Bristol City again but was again a regular from Christmas to the end of the season, but he was then transferred to Third Division (North) club York City after 9 goals in 43 appearances.
He had a single season with The Minstermen, scoring 10 goals in 31 appearances as York finished lower mid table in the division, and he joined Third Division (South) club Clapton Orient in the 1936 closed season, however he failed to make a first team appearance for The O’s, and joined Western League club Street in 1938, for whom he appeared in an FA Cup First Round match at Ipswich Town in November 1938, the only time in their history the Somerset club have gone beyond qualification, before his retirement from the game after the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939.
