Description

Clydebank, Dunbartonshire born inside left Jimmy Ramsay served in the British Army during the First World War and began his football career with Moor Park in 1917, playing for Arthurlie in 1918 and Renfrew Victoria in 1919 before joining Scottish League club Kilmarnock in the 1920 close season. Ramsay made his Scottish League debut against Raith Rovers in August 1920 and soon established himself in their first eleven.  In February 1924, Leslie Knighton, the manager of First Division club Arsenal, persuaded Ramsay to join the club after 18 goals in 118 appearances for Killie, and he made his Football League debut against Liverpool on 1st March 1924, holding his place in the side for the rest of the season.

Ramsay was a regular in Arsenal’s 1924-25 team but in the summer of 1925 Herbert Chapman, the highly successful manager of Huddersfield Town, was persuaded to join Arsenal to replace the sacked Knighton and under Chapman Ramsay was soon dropped, although he returned to the team in February 1926 as Arsenal finished runners up in the League Championship to Chapman’s old club, Huddersfield Town. He remained at Highbury competing with Billy Blyth for a first team place before being sold back to Kilmarnock at the end of December 1926, having scored 11 goals in 75 appearances for The Gunners.

He played in the first four rounds of Kilmarnock’s 1929 Scottish Cup run and scored a hat-trick against Glasgow University in the First Round, but wasn’t selected as they beat Rangers in the 1929 Final at Hampden Park. After 37 goals in 134 appearances for Kilmarnock during his second spell at the club, he joined Galston in 1931 where he played until his eventual retirement.
