Nottingham born left winger Archie Burgon played for Colwick in 1928 and Burton Joyce in 1929, joining Newark Town in 1931, from whom he signed for Second Division Notts County in 1932 (he had had a trial with them two years earlier), making his Football League debut that October against Bury. He scored 3 goals in 2 matches towards the end of the season and found himself in the team more regularly in 1933-34, but joined Midland League Grantham in the summer of 1934 after 7 goals in 27 Magpies appearances.
He was surprisingly signed by First Division Tottenham Hotspur in January 1935 and he played 4 times for them between February and April as they were relegated from the First Division. A leather football signed by the 1934 Spurs team as part of the transfer deal, hung in Grantham FC’s London Road boardroom for more than half a century. He joined Wrexham enjoying four full seasons in North Wales, where he bagged 20 goals in 1936-37 including a hat-trick against Crewe Alexandra in a 5-0 win in December 1936, finishing second in their goalscoring charts to centre forward Harold Lapham, and he scored a total of 42 goals in 154 appearances during his four seasons with The Dragons.
He joined Carlisle United in the summer of 1939 but played only twice before peacetime football was suspended due to the outbreak of the Second World War, the War effectively ending his career, after which he had retired from playing.
