Description

Gateshead. County Durham born right back Joseph Hindmarch joined hometown North Eastern League club South Shields possibly earlier than 1912, but his football career was interrupted by the onset of the First World War which forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915.

During the War, Hindmarch served as a stretcher bearer in the Army and was highly decorated for his bravery. With the War ended he resumed his football career with South Shields, who joined the Football League in 1920, however he didn’t make their first eleven during their inaugural League season, signing for Third Division (South) club Aberdare Athletic in the 1921 close season, for whom he made his Football League debut in a 3-2 defeat at Southend United in November 1921, when he played at right half.

After an outing filling in at centre forward the next month, he was recalled to the first eleven in March 1922, playing the last dozen matches of their campaign at full back, playing both sides. The following season all but two of his 18 matches were at right back, his final match for Aberdare, his last recorded club, coming in a goalless draw with Reading on the final day of the season in May 1923.
