West Bromwich born left half or left sided forward Joe Taylor began his football career with Wednesbury in 1930 and played for Leamington Town in 1931 and Shrewsbury Town in 1932 before signing for Luton Town in 1934, making his Football League debut, his only League appearance for The Hatters, in a 2-2 draw with Gillingham in May 1935, before moving on to Carlisle United at the end of the season.
He was a regular over two seasons for The Cumbrians scoring 12 times in 62 matches, including 9 goals in his first 16 matches, although from February 1936 he was mainy employed at left half and sometimes left back, before a move to Stockport County in February 1937, where he again played up front and scored 4 goals in 20 matches, most importantly he scored in each of his first three matches for The Hatters as all were won on the war to County winning the Third Division (North) Championship in 1937. He then moved to Oldham Athletic in the 1938 close season, scoring 6 goals in 15 matches for The Latics, but his career was effectively brought to an end by the outbreak of The Second World War in September 1939.
