Outside right Jimmy Johnston began his senior football career with Scottish League club Third Lanark in 1901, his effect on the team was clearly almost immediate, scoring on his Scottish League debut in a win over Queens Park in August that year. He won the Scottish Football League Championship with The Warriors in 1903-04 and played in two consecutive Scottish Cup finals, scoring in the first – a win over Rangers in 1905 via a replay – but losing to Heart of Midlothian in 1906. He also represented The Scottish League in a 1-0 defeat to The Irish League at Grosvenor Park, Belfast, in February 1903 and played twice in the Glasgow Football Association’s annual challenge match against Sheffield.
He then joined Southern League club Swindon Town in the summer of 1907 after 58 goals in 139 matches for The Hi Hi, where he played a single season, scoring 6 goals in 38 matches before returning to Third Lanark in 1908. He had two further seasons at Caithkin Park, scoring a further 13 goals in 47 matches before his retirement from the game.
