Description

Birmingham born inside left Jack Lane began his football career with Cradley Heath after the First World War and joined First Division club Burnley in 1920, making his Football League debut in a defeat at West Bromwich Albion in April 1921, his only appearance as Burnley won the League Championship. He played only twice a season in each of the following two seasons before leaving Turf Moor for Third Division (North) club Chesterfield in 1923, where he missed only 3 matches in his debut season, spending two seasons at Saltergate, scoring 19 goals in 70 matches for The Spireites.

He transferred to Brentford in March 1925 and was a regular for The Bees over several seasons before transferring to Crystal Palace in January 1931. He second top scored for Brentford with 19 goals in 1929-30 behind the eponymous Billy Lane as Brentford finished runners up in the division, narrowly missing out on promotion, his haul including a hat-trick against Fulham in February 1930, a feat he repeated the next season in an FA Cup win over Ilford, A further hat-trick against Crystal Palace on Christmas Day 1930 clearly led to his signature for The Eagles, after 86 goals in 234 matches for Brentford, by when he had already scored 19 goals for Brentford.

At Crystal Palace he helped them end the season as runners up in the Third Division (South), narrowly missing out on promotion, scoring 10 goals in 34 matches before joining Aldershot in 1932. At Aldershot he was part of their 1933 Cup run that saw them exit in the fifth round to Derby County after knocking Millwall out in the fourth round, and by the time he retired at the end of the season he had scored 10 goals in 41 matches for The Shots.
