Description

Little Lever, Lancashire born goalkeeper Joe Lansdale joined Southern League Norwich City in 1912 from his hometown club, he became a virtual ever present in the second half of the 1913-14 campaign and the last season before the war started. He joined The Royal Artillery during the conflict but was back between the posts at The Nest in 1919-20. He played in all of the first ten matches of that new season, but lost his place and joined Millwall in the summer of 1920. He was a virtual ever present during their first two Football League seasons having kept a debut clean sheet as they beat Bristol Rovers 2-0 in Millwall’s inaugural Football League fixture, and though he became far less regular a fixture from December 1922, spending three seasons battling with Sidney Crawford for the Millwall goalkeeping gloves.

He got the gloves back after keeping 10 successive clean sheets between February and April 1926, missing only 5 games in 1926-27. However he only played 8 games during Millwall’s 1927-28 Third Division (South) Championship season, with George Harford the preferred keeper. He had made a total of 263 appearances by the time he played for The Lions for the last time in February 1930. He moved back to Lancashire making 28 appearances for Accrington Stanley in 1930-31 before joining non league Folkestone in 1931.
