Description

Hill o’ Beath, Fife born outside right John Latimer began his football career with Hill o’ Beath, from where he was signed by First Division club Portsmouth in October 1928, making his Football League debut at Sheffield Wednesday in March 1929, his only appearance of his debut season. The following autumn he played 7 times, scoring in a defeat at Bolton Wanderers but lost his place in October and joined Irish League club Derry City in 1930 for a season, before a return to Scotland with East Stirlingshire in 1931. He signed for St Mirren in June 1933 and scored 17 goals in 92 appearances for The Buddies before a transfer to Dundee in July 1936.

Latimer scored twice in 40 matches for The Dees during a single season and moved to Queen of the South in 1937. He briefly returned to Football League action with Rochdale in October 1938, playing as a trialist in a win over New Brighton, but returned to Scotland to join Leith Athletic, his last recorded club before the Second World War’s outbreak less than a year later put an end to peacetime football.

NB in the photograph Latimer is far left with teammates (l-r) Jimmy Knox, Jimmy McGregor, Patrick McCamon, and Tommy Gall.
