Pencaitland, Lothian born inside right Archie Livingstone began his football career with Musselburgh Lewisvale in 1932 and played for Ormiston Primrose in 1933 before signing for Scottish League Dundee in 1934. He signed for Second Division Newcastle United for £35 in May 1935, and made his Football League debut at Sheffield United the same November, scoring his first goal for Newcastle in a 5-1 defeat. He played 4 more matches before the season end, he had two further seasons at St James’ Park, after which he was sold to Bury for £500 in June 1938, after 5 goals in 33 appearances for The Toon. It was said of him at the time “A versatile young player… he is of the nippy type, and very useful with his head”.
He scored 8 goals for Bury in 1938-39 including a hat-trick in a 5-0 victory against Tranmere Rovers in January 1939, however his career was interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 which forced the abandonment of peacetime football, by when he had made 27 appearances for The Shakers.
After the War he scored twice in two matches for Peterborough United in the 1945-46 season, before joining First Division Everton in May 1946, scoring twice in a 3-2 victory over Arsenal in his second match for The Toffees that September, one of four first team games he played in September and October 1946. In June 1947 he moved to Southport and scored twice in 25 appearances during a single season at Haig Avenue, before becoming player-coach of Irish League club Glenavon in the summer of 1948. He returned to Dundee in 1949 before joining Worksop Town in 1950, his last club before his retirement.
