Description

Handbridge, Chester born outside left Charlie Leyfield began his football career with Brickfields Athletic in 1926 from where he was signed by Everton in December 1930, making his Football League debut against Leicester City in August 1934 at outside right, a position he played that season although in general he played at outside left across his career. In May 1935 he was selected for The Football League in the George V Jubilee Match against Wales and Ireland at Goodison, scoring in a 10-2 rout. However Leyfield was never a regular at Everton, scoring 13 goals in 38 matches for The Toffees across three seasons, before a transfer to Second Division club Sheffield United in the summer of 1937.

He helped The Blades to third place in the Second Division, second top scoring to Jock Dodds with 13 goals, but in November 1938 he transferred to Doncaster Rovers after 39 matches for The Blades, scoring twice on his debut in a 4-4 draw at Barrow. His career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 after 14 goals in 36 matches for Doncaster. During the War, during which he served in The Royal Artillery, he played as a wartime guest for Chester, Fulham, and the British Army, After the War he worked as a trainer for Wrexham, Wales, Everton and scouted for Preston North End and Tranmere Rovers.

His younger brother Jack played after the War for Chester, Wrexham and Southport.
