South Shields, County Durham born centre half Alex Lockie began his football career in the early 1930’s with South Shields St Andrew’s and played for Reyrolles from where he signed for First Division club Sunderland in September 1935, making his Football League debut against Manchester City in April 1937, one of two matches he played deputising for Bert Johnston in the run up to the 1937 FA Cup Final which Sunderland won although Lockie was not involved.
A regular during 1938-39, he scored his only goal in 52 matches in a 2-2 draw with Bolton Wanderers in December 1938 before his career was severely interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939. He was still fit enough after the War to resume his career with Third Division (South) club Notts County when peacetime football resumed, joining them in September 1946, for whom he played 26 matches across the 1946-47 season before his retirement.
