Description

Hednesford, Staffordshire born right back Bert Lyons began his senior football career with Port Vale in 1924 and was also on the books at Walsall in 1925-26 but didn’t make the breakthrough into the first team at either club. He joined Second Division club Clapton Orient in 1926 and made his Football League debut against Barnsley the same October, and although The O’s were relegated in 1929, he stayed a further season at Millfields Road, scoring once in 82 appearances, before a move to Second Division club Tottenham Hotspur in 1930. He missed only 5 matches in 1930-31 as Spurs finished third in the Second Division, narrowly missing out on promotion, but played less regularly the next season before joining non league club Colwyn Bay United in 1932 after 3 goals in 57 matches for Spurs. All four of his career goals were from the penalty spot.

Two of his older brothers also played League football. Jimmy for Derby County and Wrexham in the 1920’s and Tommy for Aston Villa before the First World War, and Port Vale and Walsall after it.
