Airdrie, Lanarkshire born outside right B0bby Main began his football career with Baillieston Juniors from where he signed for Scottish League club Glasgow Rangers in October 1929, making his Scottish League debut at Falkirk in April 1930. He was in and out of the side for four years before becoming a regular in 1933. During his spell at the club he won four Scottish League Championships, two Scottish Cups, three Glasgow Cups and two Glasgow Charity Cups,
He played once for Scotland against Wales at Ninian Park, Cardiff in October 1937, having been part of a Scottish FA tour of North America two years earlier, playing in five matches including two unofficial internationals against the United States.He also played for The Scottish League XI on three occasions between February 1934 and October 1935, facing The Football League each time.
He lost his place in the Rangers side in September 1938 and played just once more the following February, having scored 35 goals in 158 matches for The Gers. Main joined Third Division (North) club New Brighton in the summer of 1939 and having made his debut at Wrexham that August, he scored on his second of 3 matches in a home win over Bradford City. However days later the outbreak of the Second World War forced the abandonment of the 1939-40 season and effectively ended his career, although he remained with New Brighton until 1941.
