Milton Regis, Kent born right half Walter Lumby began his football career as a centre forward with Lloyds Paper Mills in 1932 and played for Murston Town in 1933 before joining Sittingbourne in 1934. From there he signed for First Division Grimsby Town in November the same year, making his Football League debut against Stoke City as a centre forward on Christmas Day 1937, making 3 appearances for The Mariners over the holiday period, his last in a 1-1 draw with Preston North End on New Year’s Day.
Before the season’s end he joined Stockport County for £300 in March 1938 where he played 6 games at inside right before converting to right half later the same year. He scored his only career goal for Stockport in a 3-1 win over Oldham Athletic in December 1938 and made 17 appearances for The Hatters before The Second World War’s outbreak in September 1939 forced the abandonment of peacetime football and severely interrupted his career. During the War he played for Irish club Distillery in 1941 and after the War he played for non league clubs Park United in 1945 and Weelsby Social in 1946 before his eventual retirement.
NB this photograph was taken on 27th December 1937 before an away match at Stoke City, Lumby’s second match for Grimsby Town. The match finished a 1-1 draw.
