Left or centre half Willie McDonald began his football career with Nithsdale Wanderers at the start of the twentieth century and joined Kilmarnock towards the end of the 1903-04 season, scoring twice in 52 matches for Killy, also spending time on loan at Lanemark in 1905. In 1906 he signed for Southern League club Brighton & Hove Albion, scoring 6 goals in 68 matches for The Seagulls over the next two seasons, Brighton manager Frank Scott-Walford then joined Second Division Leeds City and McDonald was one of several players to follow him there in July 1908, making his Football League debut at Blackpool that September but not making a significant impression at Elland Road, with just 14 matches for The Peacocks. He returned to Nithsdale Wanderers in August 1909 before quickly moving to Lanemark in November 1909, where he finished his career in 1915.
His brother John McDonald played with him at Kilmarnock.
