mcgovern-tomOld Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire born inside left or right Tom McGovern began his football career with Scottish First Division club Clydebank, and spent 1921-22 on the books of Millwall, where he didn’t make the first eleven, before returning to Clydebank. McGovern made his next foray into English Football with Third Division (South) club Bristol City in the 1924 close season and made his Football League debut at inside right that September against Norwich City, scoring in a 2-0 victory, but he only played twice more that month for The Robins before losing his place and he transferred to Merthyr Town the following summer.
At Merthyr McGovern also played in the inside right berth, scoring 8 goals in 29 matches during a single season in South Wales, before a transfer to Kent League club Sheppey United in 1926. He moved again later the same year, joining Queen of the South, before a return to Football League action with Torquay United in 1927, where he mainly played at inside left during the club’s first season in the League, playing against Exeter City that August in their inaugural League fixture. He scored once in 18 matches for The Gulls, but returned to non league football firstly to play for Sheppey United in 1928, and he then played for Northfleet United in 1929 before a move to Sittingbourne in 1930. He next played for Devon General Bus Company in 1931 and finished his career at Paignton Town whom he joined in 1932.
