Inverness born right back Jimmy McKechnie served in the First World War as a corporal in The Royal Horse Artillery and after the War joined Newcastle United, playing in the North Eastern League for their reserve team. He signed for Northampton Town in 1920 making his Football League debut at Grimsby Town that August playing 11 matches for The Cobblers before the year end. He then moved to Exeter City in July 1921 and played 18 matches for The Grecians during a single season at St James’ Park before joining Second Division club Stockport County in the summer of 1922.
A single season at Edgeley Park saw him play 8 matches across the season, and in the 1923 close season he moved to Clapton Orient, where he spent three seasons making 50 appearances for The O’s before finally joining Crewe Alexandra in the summer of 1926, spending a single season at Gresty Road, making 15 appearances before leaving the professional game.
