Glespin, Lanarkshire born right back William McMillan began his football career with Lanark Athletic from where he joined Second Division club Lincoln City in the 1898 close season, making his Football League debut against Barnsley that September. A near ever present during his first three seasons at Sincil Bank, he didn’t miss a match in 1901-02 as The Imps finished fifth in the division. He remained a regular for two further seasons before joining Midland League club Newark Town in the summer of 1904 having scored once, in a 3-1 home defeat to Manchester United in November 1902, in 193 matches for Lincoln.
McMillan spent a season at Newark Town but then returned to Sincil Bank in 1905 (perhaps as player-coach) but only played twice more for Lincoln City over the season, returning to Newark Town in 1907. He then spent periods in non league football at Castleford Town in 1908, Lincoln South End in 1909, with The Royal Army Medical Corps in 1910, and finally with Waddington in 1911 and Boston Town in 1912 before his retirement.
