Description

Hartley Wintney, Hampshire born centre forward Willie Whitton was with Inverness Caledonian in 1920 before spending 1921-22 with Tottenham Hotspur without ever appearing in League or FA Cup fixtures but scoring 2 goals in 2 “other” matches. He joined First Division Chelsea in 1923 and made his Football League debut at West Bromwich Albion in March 1923, Although initially a fringe player before their relegation in 1924 his career peaked when he scored 16 goals in 23 appearances in 1924-25, with a hat-trick at Oldham Athletic in September 1924 being followed by all 4 goals at home to Leicester City two days later. It was however a brief peak. He never played again after April 1924 (after almost certainly getting injured), having scored 19 goals in 39 appearances for Chelsea.

NB in the photograph Bob McNeil and Head Trainer Jack Whitley have a slap fight in training watched by Jack Harrow, Albert Thain, James Ashford, Fred Barrett and Willie Whitton.
