Description

Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire born full back (who played either side) Jim McPhie began his senior football career with local Scottish First Division club Falkirk in 1936, but his career was severely interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War almost as soon as it had become established. During the War heĀ featured for Scotland in a wartime (unofficial) international in a 2-0 victory over Wales at Hampden Park in November 1945, but was never selected for a full cap in peacetime. He was however selected to represent The Scottish League XI playing in a 1-1 draw with The Football League at St James’ Park in March 1948.

Described as a “local boy who made good… his brilliant play found the selectors’ eyes who honoured him with a “cap” against Wales, after the War McPhie continued playing for Falkirk until his retirement in 1953 having scored 3 goals in 170 peacetime matches for the club. McPhie then managed Falkirk for seven matches in early 1957 on a caretaker basis, after Bob Shankly moved to Dundee. He was subsequently replaced by Reg Smith.
