Description

Hanley, Staffordshire born winger HarryMountford began his career with Hanley Swifts in 1902, before joining Second Division Burslem Port Vale as an amateur in June 1903. He made his Football League debut at Manchester United on 9th January 1904, and scored his first goal on 23rd January 1904 in a 4-1 defeat at Glossop. He played a total of seven games in 190304, scoring twice before claiming a regular place in the Vale line up in 1904-05 when he hit three goals in 26 appearances. He scored a hat-trick against Lincoln City in a 3-1 win at the Athletic Ground on 30th December 1905, and finished the 1905-06 season as the club’s top-scorer with 15 goals in 35 appearances, and then scored 10 goals in 36 games in 1906-07, before being transferred to Everton in June 1907, after a total of 30 goals in 103 appearances, when Vale suffered a financial crisis and resigned from the Football League.

He was largely a fringe player at Everton during his four years at Goodison Park and scored five goals in 25 games in total for The Toffees, all in the League. He then followed Bert Freeman and moved on to Burnley in April 1911, helping The Clarets to finish third in the Second Division in 1911-12 with 6 goals in 10 appearances, before they won promotion to the First Division with a second-place finish in 1912-13, but he remained largely a fringe player at Turf Moor. Mountford scored 10 goals in 29 appearances in his two years at Turf Moor. He then moved to Scotland to play for Third Lanark in 1913 where he finished his senior career.
