Sunderland born wing half (he could play both sides) Jack Martin began his football career with Horden Colliery Welfare and had an unsuccessful trial with Portsmouth in 1931 before signing for First Division Middlesbrough, making his Football League debut against Blackburn Rovers in May 1933. He broke into the first eleven from the start of the following season and was a regular starter for ‘Boro for the next five seasons before losing his place in April 1938.
Described as “a most tenacious half back thoroughly at home on either wing… he is strong, aggressive and dangerous near goal”, he played his last match for ‘Boro in January 1939 and his career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War that September, having scored 3 goals in 137 appearances for Middlesbrough.
