Waterford, Ireland born inside left Joe O’Beirne began his football career with Norman Athletic from where he joined newly elected Third Division (North) club Stalybridge Celtic in May 1921, making his Football League debut against Barrow in April 1922. He made 10 more appearances for Celtic the following season, at the end of which they lost their League status, and in August 1923 he joined First Division club Burnley, where he played 4 matches in the autumn and one further match the following February for The Clarets.
He moved on to Nelson in June 1924, where he helped them finish runners up in the Third Division (North) in 1924-25, scoring 3 goals  in 17 appearances for The Admirals, but he moved to non league club Middlewich in 1925, and subsequently played for Congleton Town in 1928, Manchester Central in 1930, finishing his career back at Stalybridge Celtic whom he joined in 1931.
