Description

Haverthwaite, Cumberland born inside right and later left half Tom Postlethwaite began his football career with Haverthwaite in the mid 1920’s and played for Ulverston Town from where he signed amateur forms for Third Division (North) club Barrow in August 1927, making his Football League debut at Hartlepools United in January 1928, the first of 9 matches he played for The Bluebirds before the end of the season. He had spells with Bouth Athletic in 1928 and again with Ulverston Town in 1929 before signing for First Division club Bolton Wanderers in May 1930, again on amateur forms, but again he didn’t make a first team breakthrough and returned to Barrow in September 1931, signing professional, and he then spent three years as a regular at Holker Street, scoring 11 goals in 77 additional matches in his second spell with Barrow.

Postlethwaite was signed by Second Division club Bradford Park Avenue in June 1934 and scored once in 20 matches for Avenue in a single season before moving to Cheshire League club Northwich Victoria in the summer of 1935, but he then returned to Football League action when he joined Northampton Town in May 1937, where he was a regular for two seasons, scoring once in 64 matches, before a move to Watford in May 1939. He had played twice for The Hornets at the start of the 1939-40 season when the outbreak of the Second World War forced the abandonment of peacetime football and effectively ended his career.
