Description

Dykehead, Lanarkshire born right back Jock McDonald started his football career with local junior club Shotts United in 1913 and joined Barnsley in January 1914, spending time on their books without making a first team appearance. He joined Scottish League Motherwell later in 1914, before signing for Airdrieonians in 1916. While with Airdrie he twice represented The Scottish League, playing first in a 3-2 win over The Football League at Ibrox in April 1919, then again in a 2-0 win over The Irish League at Windsor Park in November 1919.

In April 1920 he joined First Division Everton for £2,200, making his Football League debut at Bradford Park Avenue the following August and he missed only 3 games in his debut season for The Toffees. He spent seven seasons at Goodison Park as the club’s regular right back, and he was renowned for his tackling ability and his leadership, recognised when he was made club captain for the 1921-22 season.He never scored in 224 appearances and indeed he is second only to Tony Hibbert in Everton’s all-time list of consecutive games without scoring.

In August 1927 he joined New Brighton and played 4 seasons on The Wirral, scoring 3 goals, 2 of which were penalties, in 168 appearances at Sandheys Park before finishing his career by joining non league Connah’s Quay & Shotton in 1931 and Colwyn Bay United later the same year.
