Glasgow born left half Sandy McNab began his football career with Tuesday Waverley and played for Pollok Juniors in 1931 from where he was signed by First Division club Sunderland in 1932, making his debut at Aston Villa that August, one of only a pair of matches he played in his first season at Roker Park. Rarely assured of a regular place during six seasons at Sunderland, he had a role in two of their greatest successes. He was on the pitch for the League Championship clincher against Huddersfield Town in April 1936 despite only playing 13 matches that season, and replaced injured captain Alex Hastings in the 1937 FA Cup Final when they beat Preston North End 3-1 at Wembley. He also won the 1936 FA Charity Shield when they beat Arsenal 2-1 at Roker Park that October.

McNab joined West Bromwich Albion for a fee of £7,000 in March 1938 after 6 goals in 113 matches for Sunderland but couldn’t help save them from relegation, but was a regular in their team until the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 severely interrupted his career, by when he had scored twice in 55 matches for The Baggies. During the War he guested for various clubs including Nottingham Forest, Northampton Town and Walsall. He eventually signed for Newport County in April 1946 but made just 3 first team appearances that autumn for The Exiles. McNab played for Dudley Town later in 1946 and joined Northwich Victoria in 1947, becoming their manager from 1948 to 1949 before eventually retiring in 1952.
