Description

Tamworth, Staffordshire born goalkeeper Horace Pearson  started his football career at Tamworth Castle in 1925 and Nuneaton Town in 1926 and moved to Luton Town in 1928, but never played in their first team, before joining Second Division club Blackpool in 1929, making his Football League debut against Barnsley in February 1930. He played 57 games for The Seasiders before joining Oldham Athletic in the 1931 close season, for whom he played a further 39 matches over the next two seasons before a move to Coventry City in May 1933.

Over the next three years he was a member of their Third Division (South) Championship winning team of 1935-36 (after narrowly missing out on promotion with second and third placed finishes the previous two seasons), playing 30 times in the League during their successful campaign. However he lost his place to Bill Morgan in March 1936, who was an ever present in Coventry’s 1936-37 Second Division campaign.

Pearson joined Third Division (South) club Newport County in the 1937 close season after 124 appearances for The Sky Blues, and he subsequently played an ever present season for Newport County, making 47 appearances in 1937-38. He joined non league Barry Town in the summer of 1938 for a short spell before signing for Bristol City in September 1938, making 17 appearances before returning to non league football in 1939 when he joined Midland League club Scarborough. His career was then ended by the outbreak of the Second World War.

From a famous goalkeeping family, his father was Hubert Pearson who kept goal for West Bromwich Albion from 1907 to 1924. His brother was Harry Pearson who was also Albion’s goalkeeper in the 1920’s and 1930’s. His cousin was Birmingham and England goalkeeper Harry Hibbs.
