Description

New Sawley, Harrogate born full back George Clifford began his football career with Sutton Junction in 1923, from where he joined Second Division Portsmouth in 1924, making his Football League debut against Stoke that November. He remained for seven seasons, making 182 appearances, and winning promotion to the First Division with Pompey in 1926-27 as runners up in the Second Division, with Clifford ever present, as he was in the next season, their first in the First Division in their history. He played for The Professionals in their FA Charity Shield defeat to The Amateurs in 1926, and toured as a member of the England squad in their May 1928 matches against France and Belgium, for both internationals he was however a non playing reserve and never won an England cap. He lost his place in the Pompey first team in 1930 before transferring to Mansfield Town in 1931. He made another 40 appearances for the Stags in 1931-32 in a single season spell at Field Mill. He then ended his career joining non league Ilkeston Town in the summer of 1932.
