Description

Goalkeeper George Anderson was born at Haydon Bridge in Northumberland and began his football career in local football with Haydon Bridge in 1907 and played for Mickley Colliery Welfare in 1910 before he signed for First Division Sunderland in May 1911 as understudy to Walter Scott, making his Football League debut on 30th December that year at Middlesbrough. He played another 7 matches before the end of the season but only twice in the following season, when Sunderland went on win the Football League Championship by when Joe Butler was the principal glovesman.

In May 1914 he joined Aberdeen making his Scottish League debut that August in a 3-1 win at Dundee, but his contract was cancelled in April 1917 and in between his service in the First World War with the Royal Artillery, he played as a wartime guest for Dundee between October 1917 and April 1918, before returning to Aberdeen in August 1919. Over two spells at Pittodrie he made 213 appearances for the Dons before hanging up his gloves in the summer of 1922. He later joined the Aberdeen Board of Directors and remained involved with them until 1945 when he joined Dundee as manager, where he had considerable success managing the club until July 1954, after which he became a director of the club prior to his death in 1956. He is still viewed with some reverence in Dundee for his achievements.
