Felling, Gateshead, County Durham born left back Jimmy Lodge began his football career before the First World War with junior Newcastle club Coxlodge in 1913, and for Northern Alliance side Scotswood in 1914, playing for Newburn in 1918 after the First World War as a semi professional. He served his country with distinction during the First World War, being decorated with the Distinguished Conduct Medal and bar, as well as the Military Medal and bar.
He joined Second Division Hull City in December 1919 initially playing under the nom de plume of James Barrass, making his Football League debut against South Shields in January 1920. His playing career at Anlaby Road spanned five seasons, making 83 appearances for The Tigers before joining Halifax Town in the summer of 1924, where he stayed a single season and was an ever present for The Shaymen, making 43 appearances. He joined non league Nuneaton Town in 1925 and played for Midland League York City later during the 1925-26 season before retiring on his appointment as Hull City’s assistant trainer in August 1926. He spent most of the rest of his life as a member of the backroom staff at The Tigers, his service to the club lasting some 50 years.
