Chorley, Lancashire born inside left Teddy Hodgson came into professional football quite late, signing for Second Division Burnley in 1911 aged 25 having played for Chorley, and making his Football League debut at Barnsley that September. He scored 18 goals in their 1912-13 campaign as Burnley achieved promotion as Second Division runners up and Hodgson was also part of their FA Cup semi final team beaten by Sunderland in a replay at St Andrews, Birmingham.
He was most famously part of the Burnley team the following season which won the 1914 FA Cup Final 1-0 against Liverpool at The Crystal Palace. Hodgson scoring a hat-trick in a 6-1 thumping of Chelsea in September 1913 and then another en route to the Final in the FA Cup second round against Derby County, as he scored 17 goals in the campaign.
In the final season before peacetime football was suspended due the onset of the First World War, during which he fought in the Manchester Regiment, Hodgson scored 20 goals in the campaign, top scoring for the club for the first time. He played 137 games for The Clarets scoring 62 goals and he also scored 39 goals in 62 appearances in wartime football in between his military service. While still on service he contracted a kidney disease and died in August 1919.
