Heywood, Lancashire born wing half Ernie Braidwood began his football career before the First World War with Heywood York Street Congregationals and after the War he played for Chesterfield Municipal in 1919 before joining Oldham Athletic in June 1920. He made his Football League debut for The Latics in the First Division against Bolton Wanderers in January 1921 but struggled to break into the team and after a goal in 10 appearances he joined Nelson in May 1922.
At Nelson he quickly became a regular, scoring 6 times as they won the Division Three (North) Championship in 1923, although they were immediately relegated the following season, and he was an ever present in 1924-25. In March 1926 he moved to Rochdale after 11 goals in 135 appearances for Nelson, where he played three more seasons scoring once in 89 appearances for ‘Dale before going into non league football with Great Harwood in 1929, subsequently joining New Mills in 1930.
