The younger brother of pre First World War Sheffield United and England forward Arthur Brown, Gainsborough, born Fred Brown joined Sheffield United after the War having joined his hometown club, Gainsborough Trinity, immediately prior to its outbreak in 1914, having regularly guested for The Blades during the War while working in a munitions factory before serving in the Armed Forces.
He made his Football League debut against Manchester City in September 1919 but struggled to establish himself in the first team during his four post war seasons, his best season, 1920-21, saw him make 21 appearances. After 8 goals in 40 games he moved to Brighton & Hove Albion in 1923, where he scored 3 goals in 19 games, and then in June 1924 to Gillingham, where in his first season alone he played nearly as many games as in the previous four combined! His creditable return of 31 goals in 108 games over his three season spell in Kent was followed by a move in the summer of 1927 back to non league football with Gainsborough Trinity.
