Bolton, Lancashire born wing half Jimmy Carney had been on the books at both Bolton Wanderers and Blackpool without making their first elevens, and was an amateur at Stockport County during 1908-09 without playing for their first team, before joined Glossop in October 1910, making his Football League debut for them against former club Blackpool in November 1910. He continued to play for Glossop until the suspension of football due to the onset of the First World War, making 144 appearances for The Hillmen and scoring 6 goals.
On the resumption of peacetime football he moved back to re-join Bolton Wanderers but once again didn’t make the first eleven and moved to Stalybridge Celtic in June 1920, the season before they joined the Football League. He scored in Staybridge’s inaugural League match against Chesterfield in a 6-0 romp in August 1921, and only missed 4 of Celtic’s matches in their two seasons of League football, but when they resigned from the League (as it was felt that it could not attract enough support to justify a League side – in spite of the fact that average attendance of 5,480 in 1922 was almost 2,000 more than neighbouring Rochdale, who played in the same Division), Carney joined Newport County in June 1923 after 14 goals in 81 games. He finished his career with four seasons in Wales where he scored 14 times in 123 games, by then well into his mid thirties, before a cartlidge injury forced his retirement in 1927. He later coached Newport’s A team in the 1950’s.
