Description

Earlestown, Lancashire born centre forward Arthur Gee began his football career with Earlestown in 1908 from where he signed for First Division Oldham Athletic in June 1911, making his Football League debut at West Bromwich Albion in May 1912, becoming a first team regular from February 1913.

He was a member of Oldham’s 1913 FA Cup semi final team that lost to eventual winners Aston Villa at Ewood Park, Blackburn, and played both sides of the First World War for Oldham, being joint top scorer for The Latics both in 1913-14 and 1919-20, and scoring 13 goals in 1914-15 as The Latics finished runners up in the League Championship to Everton (Oldham’s highest ever League position) in the final season before the onset of the War forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915.

During the War he appeared once as a wartime guest for Liverpool in the 1916-17 season and returned to play two further seasons for The Latics once peacetime football had resumed in 1919. In total he scored 46 goals in 119 matches for Oldham before a move to Stalybridge Celtic in July 1921 for their inaugural Football League season.

He scored 11 goals in 28 appearances for Celtic and was their joint second top goalscorer behind Charlie Petrie, but moved to Rochdale the following May, however he only scored twice in 8 games for ‘Dale that autumn, leaving to join Cheshire County League club Ashton National in 1923. Gee briefly returned to the Football League signing for Crewe Alexandra in January 1924 but played only once that month at home to his former club Rochdale, before returning to non league football, where he played for Nuneaton Town and Ferranti in 1924, Mossley in 1926, Witton Albion in 1927 and finally Platt Brothers in 1928 before his eventual retirement.
