Description

Blyth, Northumberland born Bobby Hutchinson had been at Gosforth and Palmer’s (Jarrow) prior to the First World War before moving to the Scottish League with St Mirren in August 1914. He made 2 appearances for The Buddies before the War interrupted his career. After the War he signed for Newcastle United in May 1919 but failed to make a first team appearance and joined new Football League club Ashington in May 1921 making his Football League debut at Grimsby Town in September 1921 and scoring 4 goals in 22 appearances in their inaugural Football League season.

He transferred to Nelson in May 1922, and won the Third Division (North) Championship with them in his first season missing only 4 games. However Nelson were immediately relegated from the Second Division and after a single goal in 64 games he joined Second Division Stockport County in January 1924, however he only appeared 4 times for The Hatters, scoring once, before joining Chesterfield that May.

A single season at Saltergate (one goal in 13 appearances for The Spireites) was followed by a move to Barrow in July 1925 where he scored 4 goals in 38 appearances in 1925-26. He then joined the exodus to the nascent American Soccer Leagues, playing for 5 teams over the next two years (New Bedford Whalers, Springfield Babes, Fall River Marksmen, Newark Skeeters and Hartford Americans) before returning to Darlington in March 1928. He played 3 times for The Quakers that month before joining non league West Stanley, moving to Gosforth & Coxlodge BL in 1930, where he finished his career.
