Description

Shardlow, Derbyshire born centre forward Syd Leigh had been with Osmaston from 1913, but after World War One ended he joined First Division Derby County, making his debut at Oldham Athletic in November 1919. He played one more game the following month at Blackburn Rovers before moving to Bristol Rovers in the summer of 1920, scoring in their inaugural Football League fixture in a 2-0 win at Newport County in August 1920. He was a consistent scorer, bagging 24 goals and ending the club’s top scorer in that first League season, with 4 goals coming against Exeter City (no Rovers player has yet scored more than 4 in a League match), before top scoring again the following season with 15 goals including a hat-trick against Aberdare Athletic. However he played his last game at Watford over Easter 1922, was injured and never played again, returning to Derbyshire and unable to find a club, despite having scored 39 goals in 71 appearances for The Pirates.
