The son of Sheffield United goalkeeper Joe Leivesley, Sheffield born inside left Fred Lievesley signed for First Division Manchester City in the summer of 1919 from Staveley Town, whom he’d joined during the First World War, making his Football League debut at West Bromwich Albion that December. He had to wait until October 1921 for his next City appearance, at Blackburn Rovers, before moving to join Southend United in the summer of 1922.
He only played 6 times for The Shrimpers during 1922-23 and, joining Exeter City, failed to make their first eleven at all the following season. Lievesley returned to Yorkshire and joined Rotherham County in the summer of 1925, where at last he found regular football, his 13 goals in 1927-28 seeing him as Rotherham’s second top scorer in the season behind Joe Scott, scoring 33 goals in 133 games over the next five years before his retirement in 1930.
In addition to his illustrious father, his brothers Leslie, and Dennis Lievesley were all professional footballers, as were his uncles Wilf and Fred. He was also the great nephew of Sheffield United full back Harry Lilley. Of his brothers Leslie played for Doncaster Rovers, Manchester United, Torquay United and Crystal Palace, Dennis for Aldershot.
