Description

Pendlebury, Lancashire born inside forward Jack Lythgoe began his football career with Newbury in 1911 and played for Walkden Central in 1912, from where he signed for Second Division Bury in 1913, making his Football League debut against Leeds City in March 1914, playing 4 times that month, scoring his first goal in a 1-0 win over Glossop at Gigg Lane. He became a Bury regular the next season, top scoring with 17 goals as Bury finished mid table, but the onset of the First World War  forced the suspension of peacetime football in 1915, severely disrupting his career.

On its resumption he joined Nottingham Forest after 18 goals in 41 appearances for The Shakers. At Forest he again top scored in 1919-20 and in two seasons scored 13 goals in 64 appearances as they struggled to avoid relegation both years, before moving to Newport County in the summer of 1921. He enjoyed just a single season in Wales, scoring 4 times in 36 appearances, as Newport narrowly avoided having to apply for re-election, before moving to East Anglia to join Norwich City.

His 3 goals in 15 appearances for The Canaries in 1922-23 would prove his last League action, he joined non league Ebbw Vale in 1923, playing for Chorley, Margate and Horwich RMI subsequently. He also spent 1924-25 at Crewe Alexandra but couldn’t make their first eleven. He finished his career with Kearsley Celtic, joining them in 1931.
