Hetton-le-Hole, County Durham born winger Billy Middleton started playing junior football in the north east in 1910 with Boldon Colliery Welfare, playing for Newcastle City in 1911, from whom he joined Southern League Brighton & Hove Albion in July 1912. He scored 8 times in 34 games in 1912-13, before he moved to Scotland with Ayr United in June 1913, but his football career was interrupted as Middleton fought with the 17th (Service) Battalion of the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment) during the First World War.
After the War he signed for Aberdeen for £250 in July 1920, scoring 9 goals in 126 appearances over the following three seasons, before returning to England to join Southend United in September 1923. A single season for The Shrimpers saw 31 appearances, before a return to Scotland, joining Ayr United in June 1924. He then joined Dumbarton that September with whom he made 6 appearances that autumn before he finished his playing career.
