Keyworth, Nottinghamshire born inside forward Alf Widdowson played for Boots Athletic in 1918 before joining First Division Notts County, for whom he made his Football League debut against Newcastle United in March 1920. Widdowson first made an impact in 1921-22 when his four goals in half a dozen earlier cup ties helped The Magpies to the FA Cup semi final where they lost 2-0 to eventual winners Huddersfield Town at Turf Moor. Although he missed much of the following season at Notts won the Second Division Championship, in 1924-25 he missed only 3 League games and scored 10 goals in what was his most successful campaign at Meadow Lane, and after relegation in 1926 he was sold to Coventry City in March 1928 after 46 goals in 157 appearances. His 3 years at Highfield Road saw 17 goals in 73 matches before he joined non league Newark Town in 1932, playing subsequently for Heanor Town in 1933 before retirement.
