Stockport, Cheshire born right back Bill Bocking played for Hyde United in 1922 before joining his hometown Second Division professional club Stockport County in 1924, making his Football League debut at Crystal Palace that October. He soon became a regular member of their first eleven being, although they were relegated in 1926. Bocking was an ever present during 1926-27 and 1927-28. In the latter season he helped them finish third in the Third Division (North), and he then missed 6 games in total in the next two seasons as they finished runners up both years, narrowly missing out on promotion.
He playing for Stockport County either side of a three year spell at Everton, whom he joined in April 1931 as they were about to be promoted as Second Division Champions, and for whom he played 10 times in 1931-32 as they won the League Championship. However he was mainly on the fringes at Goodison Park and had only played 16 times in total when he re-joined Stockport County in the summer of 1934, playing for them as they finally won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1936-37, when he played 32 League matches before losing his place in March 1937. He played only 5 more matches for Stockport in the Second Division with his last match coming at Blackburn Rovers in March 1938. Having scored 6 goals in 398 appearances across his two spells for The Hatters he retired later that year.
