Description

Laughton Common, near Rotherham, Yorkshire born left half Eddie Boot played for Aughton and Denaby United before joining hometown First Division club Sheffield United in October 1935, making his Football League debut at Charlton Athletic a month later. In two seasons at Bramall Lane he made 45 appearances before a transfer to Huddersfield Town in March 1937. He appeared in the 1938 FA Cup Final, which they lost 1-0 to Preston North End at Wembley before his career was interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939.

He played both sides of the War for Huddersfield Town, and he captained the side in the post-war period, missing only 4 matches in Huddersfield’s first three post-war seasons. He played his last matches during their 1951-52 relegation season, after which he hung up his boots having scored 5 goals in 328 appearances for The Terriers. He then joined the coaching staff at the club, becoming their manager in December 1959, a post which he held for over four years until to September 1964, without being able to guide them back to the top flight.

NB in the photograph Boot stands on the left with team mate George Richardson.
