Description

Goldthorpe, Yorkshire born centre forward Ted Bowen started playing for Wath Athletic in 1925, joining Arsenal in February 1926 for £500 and making his Football League debut at Bury in May 1927. The young striker scored 56 goals in 61 Football Combination appearances, adding another 21 in 11 friendly matches. After failing to break into the first team he transferred to Northampton Town for £750 in February 1928, going on to achieve cult status at The County Ground, where he scored a hat-trick on his debut at Norwich City in a 4-3 win in February 1928 scoring 15 times that season as Northampton finished runners up in the Third Division (South). He then went goal crazy, reaching prolific levels with 34 strikes in 1928-29, 28 strikes in 1929-30 and 28 in 1930-31 as Northampton again went close to promotion, top scoring for the club in the process. He netted  a modest 15 times in 1931-32 before joining Bristol City in the 1932 close season, having scored 120 goals in 172 Cobblers appearances. He netted 32 times in 42 matches for Bristol City in 1932-33 including two hat-tricks, finishing as the club’s top scorer, before scoring 5 times in 19 games during his final professional season.
