He made his Football League debut against Bolton Wanderers in February 1929, scoring in a 2-1 victory, and scored a hat-trick in his second game in a win at Portsmouth, before converting to centre forward for the 1930-31 season. He made 220 appearances and scored 183 goals for The Rams, only Steve Bloomer and Kevin Hector have scored more goals for Derby County. Leicester City signed the prolific goalscorer on 20th November 1936 for a £6,000 transfer fee, with the striker scoring 25 goals in his first season for The Foxes. His arrival at Filbert Street galvanised Leicester’s push for promotion and his 33 League goals from only 27 games helped them claim the Second Division Championship, just ahead of Blackpool, and also made him top scorer in the division. He went on to score 56 goals in 87 appearances. However with the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 his career was halted and he retired in August 1943.

In August 1943 Bowers was appointed coach to Notts County, working with the youth team. After two years, he returned to Derby County as assistant trainer, a position he held for over twenty years.

His son Jack Bowers, Jr. played for Derby County between 1957 and 1966, making 65 League appearances in that time.
